TALKS FOR CHILDREN
I have been speaking in schools and libraries for over a decade.
I'm a former primary school teacher who loves to talk to students
about writing.
A
Writer's Journey: From Idea to Published Book
Content of Presentation (For Grades 1-7, 45 minutes to 1 hour)
Using examples from my wildlife books, I describe the process of
creating a nonfiction book - from idea, to research and writing, editing,
art and design. I share amazing facts about wildlife, discuss animal
adaptations and bring animal furs and skulls to show.
Depending on the age and interests of the students, I can also talk
in detail about other books I've written. Older students may enjoy
learning about The Kids Book of Canada's Railway or
The Kids Book of Canadian Immigration, while younger students
might like hearing the story behind my picture books.
I am pleased to adapt my presentation to suit your needs and interests.
Please ask if you'd like me to speak about a particular book.
For more details, see my Author
Presentation Sheet here.
TALKS
FOR ADULTS
I'm also an experienced presenter at writing festivals, professional
conferences, and Teacher's Pro-D Days. I enjoy the opportunity to
speak to teachers, librarians, parents and university students and
have a range of presentations to offer.
An
Inside Look at Children's
Nonfiction
Today's nonfiction books are engaging, informative and artfully designed.
In this presentation, I explore the variety in children's nonfiction,
and show you how a nonfiction book is created from idea, to
research and writing, editing, art and design.
The Story
Behind the Story
There's a story behind every book that an author writes. In this
talk, I introduce you to the stories behind my books and the reasons
I wrote them. My picture books feature a child with dyslexia and a
baby who was adopted from China, both based on personal experience.
History
Comes Alive!
There's an explosion of interest in history these days. This presentation
discusses how to tap into that interest and write engaging books for
children than feature socially relevant topics of the past.
Nonfiction
ABC: The Art, Business and Craft of Writing Nonfiction for Children
When most people think about writing for children, they imagine read-aloud
picture books. But, beyond picture books is a whole range of genres
to consider. In this talk, I explain why it may be easier to break
into publishing by writing nonfiction. Get tips on: hot topics, what
publishers are looking for, how to write a proposal, why series are
important, and how to get started.
